#Politics on AustNet Chat channel is growing slow and steady with regular users contributing to the channel as time goes on, most lively times is usualy between 4pm and 1 am AEST.

Channel Operators aim to facilitate a clean and 'fair' environment that enables users to share and debate ideas and information relating to Australian politics with people accross Australia and abroad.

Its a on going learning proccess for all operaters, We have had lots feed back from both operaters users/visitors.

As we do pay attention to suggestions and comments from users, we ask you to understand we are only human and we cant satisfy every one.

We strongly encourage people to create thier own channel if they want to discuss a specific topic over a long period of time.

Please read the guidelines conditions of use and the specific reasons for op action.

Common dicussion topics are the war on terrorism, IR law changes, civil rights, environment, fuel prices and trade.

Please participate within a few simple guidelines.

-You must observe the server/network rules in /motd when you log on.

-Be polite, regardless of the behavior or political stance.

-Avoid swearing, personal attacks or insults/derogitory epithets, specialy based on social stereoypes, this will help you convey your contributions to the channel in a way that most people will see as worthwhile reading.

-Discususs/debate the ideas/information/topic in the channel, avoid talking about people in the channel themselves.

-Dont bother responding to people that are talking/ rambling of topic, make sure everyone you engage in conversation with is worth your time.

-Make sure everything you say is what you would want to say in front of a world wide audience.

-Its a politics chat channel, so please dont repeat or flood or say anthing that isnt related to the channel theme.

-Talking about how ops run the channel in the channel itself is distracting to other users, if you think that someone should be removed from the channel for a reason that we have stated, msg the op channel.
If you want to contact a operator please msg the op channel, available ops will read your msg and respond if need.

NOTE: Channel operaters, owners, server admin are not responisble for information passed though the channel, all the same we will remove chatters when we can if there is reason to.

You are responisble for what you say, therefor it is also up to you to provide the conversations and debates.

Why do ops remove people from the channel?
The main reason why ops take action in a channel is to ensure users and visitors that the channel itself is what people expect it to be, this has been predifined by operators and users over time.

Here are some specific reasons why you can be blocked from the channel:
1. Violence
Threats of violence against channel users and nonusers, this includes inciting violence.

2: Use of ad hominem.

3: Derogatory language
Use of derogatory epithets, be they personal, racial, religious or other.

4: Exessive control chars
Posting in ALL CAPS, excessive use of boldface, underline, colours, or any other methods of making your posts irritating to look at.

5: Flooding
i.e. repetitive postings. This also includes cutting and pasting text to the channel, unless it is limited to no more than 4 posts per 10 minutes.

6: Spamming
hIncludes advertising of other sites when it is not relevant to an ongoing discussion. This also includes political slogans, i.e., phrases that are or might be used by a political organisation to advertise their goals (e.g., Australians for Australians, Put The Liberals Last, etc.)

7: Discussion of channel issues in the channel itself
If you disagree with how the channel is run, or want to contribute ideas on how its should be run or other channel operation questions, send a private message to an op.

8: Not backing up your statements with 'proof'.
If a statement is made and needs to be supported, it is the statement maker's responsibility to either back it up with argument, cite references or find the supporting documentation.

9: Language
English is the language of the channel. Continuous use of any language other than English (for example, more than one consecutive post at a time) is generaly not appropriate.

10:Identity theft
Use of a nick regularly used by a another chatter to disguise yourself or to represent yourself as that person.

11: Evading actions of channel operators
Evading a ban or a devoice will get you banned longer.

12: Lameness
This includes such behaviour as trawling the channel for personal information, being a pervert and persistently talking about subjects that don't have anything to do with the channels theme.

13: Use of language that is generally not appropriate to be used in the presence of minors
this includes swearing, sexual innuendos and violent language.

14: Interupting chatters.
Take time to pick up the current topic of conversation if there is one before contributing.

15: Quoting from other irc sources other than #politics
Referring to private messages or chats on other channels, We have no proof of what goes on in private msg or other channels.

16: Direct insults or name calling
Lets keep the underhanded ones to a minimum, this includes calling people stupid or idiot ect. (this was taken from #newsgarden rules on undernet... thanks.) It is number 2 but it sometimes needs to be spelled out.

17: Making the channel your own lounge room
Not everyone that uses the chat room knows the history of what everyone has said, so keep ongoing chats between regular users in other channels and save #politics for political input, keep topics not related to the channel theme in another channel.

Connecting to the AustNet chat network

Connecting to AustNet is easy, all you need is a internet relay chat client like MIRC (windows) or Xchat(linux).

Once you have installed you chat client, simply edit the fields in your connect box to suit you.
(Its a general rule not to enter any real information about yourself as it can be used by people that may want to expolit you.)

Then type '/server irc.austnet.org' which will connect you to a AustNet server.

After your connection is succesful, have a read of the message of the day which should have some conditions of use, then type '/join #politics' to enter our channel.

You should be able to start participating within 2 minutes of entering because our channel is moderated.
